OVERBITE (OVERJET) CORRECTION WITH
THE FIXED HERBST APPLIANCE
Approximately 65% of all orthodontic patients treated nationwide have moderate to severe protrusion of upper anterior teeth. Most patients refer to this as "OVERBITE." (The actual orthodontic term is "OVERJET.")
Many technologies have been developed over the years to correct overjet, including HEADGEAR, TOOTH EXTRACTIONS, TADs (temporary anchorage devices or implants), and even JAW SURGERY.
A few of the many appliances that have been used have such names as PENGUIN, TWIN-BLOCK, FRANKEL, BIONATOR, ACTIVATOR, and many, many more.
What we have found in our office is that the most effective, efficient, predictaqble, controllable, stable results can be achieved with a SPECIALLY DESIGNED, FIXED HERBST APPLIANCE. This appliance is cemented into place and activated for 6-10 months in most cases.
This appliance wil correct symmetric or non-symmetric overjet malocclusions in mild or severe form. With this appliance, we can combine overjet correction with upper arch expansion and REDUCE THE NEED FOR TOOTH EXTRACTION BY AT LEAST 80%.
After expansion and overjet correction are achieved, then the Herbst appliance can be removed and BRACES or INVISALIGN can be placed to complete the correction. |
